AWAKE Children’s Advocacy Center https://awakecacenter.org Adults Working and Advocating for Kids' Empowerment is a nonprofit organization focused on advocating for victims of child abuse and coordinates services for victims in Jackson County. AWAKE provides a child friendly environment where children and families receive care by motivated, caring staff. AWAKE works vigorously to educate communities to recognize signs of child abuse and to understand the importance of reporting offenses.
Literacy Council of Cashiers https://www.cashiersliteracycouncil.org Founded in 2006, the Literacy Council helps non-reading adults and children overcome illiteracy. Thirty percent of the residents in Jackson county live in the lowest levels of literacy. For them, everyday life poses an endless series of challenges. They are less likely than their literate neighbors to be employed full time, advance in their jobs, or vote. Even their health is jeopardized when they are unable to read prescription labels or written medical advice. The Literacy Council serves about 3,000 children annually. Since its inception, it has served over 20,000 children.
Cashiers Valley Preschool https://cashiersvalleypreschool.com Founded in 2007, CVP is a reliable and cost-effective (tuition waivers for challenged families) child care provider in Cashiers. The care center aims to improve their students' literacy and numeracy through the use of structured activities such as play, songs, and story-telling. Fostering individuality, CVP builds a strong foundation for kindergarten and beyond.
Hampton Preschool &
Early Learning Center https://hamptonpreschoolnc.com Believing that children and families need to learn from the experiences, knowledge, and different cultures, Hampton Preschool readies children for the future. The Center embraces the whole family to create a rich and challenging emerging curriculum that cultivates lifelong learning in a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment that respects the unique personality of each child.
Community Care Clinic of
Highlands-Cashiers https://www.highlandscashiersclinic.org Community Care Clinic provides free primary medical care, in a caring and professional environment, to those in need. The clinic refers patients to both the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and Angel Medical Center, as well as other non-profits that provide services to the same demographic. These include but are not limited to dental clinics, food pantries, and other resources, such as the SNAP program and referrals to county health and social services departments.
Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry
https://fishesandloavescashiers.org One in five families living in Jackson County falls below the poverty line. Fishes & Loaves provides free food to individuals and families in need and helps to alleviate food insecurity in all areas of Jackson County and surrounding areas. In 2024, 2,641 households received 3,910 boxes of food, allowing us to serve 9,148individuals..
Four Seasons (Healthcare) https://foursseasonscare.org Four Seasons is a nationally recognized, non-profit Hospice and Palliative Care leader, co-creating quality care in Western North Carolina since 1979. This non-profit, funded by community donations, provides quality care, no matter of the individual’s ability to pay. Patients receive the best advancements in care and support through a myriad of services. Last year, Four Seasons served more than 1500 patients and clients.
Pisgah Legal Services https://www.pisgahlegal.org Pisgah Legal Services, a nonprofit founded in 1978, seeks to pursue justice by providing legal assistance and advocacy to help low-income people in Western North Carolina meet their basic needs and improve their lives. More than 23,000 of the most vulnerable people in 18 surrounding communities are annually served in the areas of housing, safety from abuse, health care, and income. In 2023, there were 457 people served in Jackson County. The cost of Jackson services exceeds $240,000, all of which derived from donations and grants.
SAFE, Inc., of Transylvania and Southern Jackson County https://www.safetransylvania.org SAFE is a non-profit dedicated to eliminate domestic and sexual violence through prevention, advocacy, protection, education, and healing. SAFE supports victims of abuse by giving them a free, safe space to receive the intervention necessary, thereby helping to create a more positive, stronger, and safer community. In 2023 SAFE impacted 1124 people.
United Christian Ministries
of Jackson County https://www.ucmsylva.org Serving Jackson County residents since 1989 with a food pantry, urgent financial support, and other assistance. UCM of Jackson County operates a food pantry five days per week, serving more than 1,260 unique households and over 4,030 household members in 2024 with supplemental food assistance. Approximately one third of those served are children. In addition to distributing over 231,000 pounds of food, UCM provided around 1,500 bags of household and personal items to families in need. UCM also collaborates with various local agencies to assist families with past due utilities (electric, water, heat), rent, and other essentials as funding sources and donations allow.
